With a (perhaps too) personal twist, this short introductory section offers a reflexive, albeit shallow, exercise on the ethical and political challenges of researching the private lives of individuals who live in the “global south”. As white European with a colonial heritage in the Belgian Congo from parts of my family, documenting the (violent) manifestations of a colonially-inflected state governance in the Congo stirred many questions of power-relations, inequality, prejudice, and injustice I have here attempted to address in the best way I could – it goes without saying, however, that this section doesn’t do justice to the complexity and challenges these issues bring about, and this is an agenda I have continued to work on.
